Back in 1989 before it was ‘socially acceptable’ to have a baby and not be married I found my self in a scary situation and felt I had no one to turn to. I had a strict stepfather and a scared boyfriend. I knew I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I didn’t keep this baby growing inside of me. I already loved her right from the first kick. I was assigned a social worker and once my daughter was born she put me in touch with a kind lady in Wimbledon. We sat and chatted and she offered me a room in a shared house in Raynes Park owned by the charity Life. There were three other girls with their babies. We had a few different ladies who came to chat and advise every few days too. That first few months of being a single mum where I bonded with the other girls and had the volunteers support saved me and I’ve never forgotten what they did for me and my daughter. I still have the same views and hope that any other women are lucky enough to have the support needed to keep their babies too. I can’t imagine my life without my amazing daughter, my best friend. Now 27 years later I’m lucky enough to be a nanny to her two beautiful girls too.
